why do people get traditional japanese tattoos?

hi, I'm about to get a 'traditional' japanese tatoo of a koi in Tokyo, I'm just curios about other people's motivations in getting a 'traditional' japanese tatoo... do you think they're pretty? cultural? historical? all of the above? do you have an afiliation with Japanese culture? claire
