A little help, please

Alright, so I'm open to the fact that I am going about this the WRONG way. Because all I've ever been taught has been that THIS is the WRONG way. And before you state the obvious, which I already did, I'm going to let you know that - I am not just participating in a conversation, I'm actually looking for some legitimate responses that might be HELPFUL. I have a machine and everything I need to make sure that my potential endeavor is a safe one. I've apprenticed before - and no I have not tattooed a person before. I had a few moral dilemmas and whatnot that turned me off temporarily to the industry (when I should have directed that toward particular people, not an entire industry.) I have come to the realization that this is what I want to do, this is what gets me fired up, this is what I'm actually passionate about. I'm passionate about art, but - FUCK, I have so much to say and learn and converse about this particularly. There's nothing else I'm so defense about - so proud of... Getting a bit dramatic there - moving right along... I didn't abandon my mentor for stupid reasons (i.e. laziness, pride) but because I cared too much about it to watch someone squash my potential and ambition (imagine a gap employee training video). It's hard to work so hard for something and for someone when it was handed to them on silver platter, and their shop handed to them as a gift for getting clean, especially because this was a last resort, not a passion. The obvious resolution here is to get another apprenticeship, with someone more suitable. BUT this person, despite everything was an AMAZING artist. One of the best I've met. I would really like to have someone I could talk to about all of this while I'm for the first time hands-on-learning. I take this very seriously, but I've also come to realize that some of the rites of passage that we are to go through are a bit .. bullshit. It's a hard game to play; being a good enough artist to make your mentor proud, but not being better so as create competition. I'm not in this to make a name for myself. I'm not trying to upstage people, or prove myself to anyone other than the owner of the flesh. I really want this. and it would be awesome is someone could look past all the hoops they had to jump through and could relate, because I'm going to make this happen one way or the other - but I'd like it to be something positive, and have someone positive to look up to.
